The First Female Navy Ship Captain Emerges
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] The Navy has its first female ship captain. The protagonist is Lieutenant Commander An Mi-young. Lieutenant Commander An held an inauguration ceremony on the 24th and took command of the Seonginbong ship (LST, 2,600-ton class) belonging to the Navy's 5th Star Battle Group.
Lieutenant Commander An joined the Navy as an Officer Candidate School (OCS) cadet in 2003. She was greatly influenced by her father An Hyung-ho (Marine Corps 232nd class), a Marine Corps veteran, and her younger brother An Seung-hwa, a Navy Academy graduate and Major. Lieutenant Commander An formed a connection with the Seonginbong ship in 2005, serving as a deck officer and learning shipboard life. She got married in 2015 and has a three-year-old daughter.
Lieutenant Commander An said, "There is an advantage that female officers as captains can treat the troops more gently and kindly," adding, "Having given birth, I think I can better understand the feelings of parents who send their children to the military."
However, Lieutenant Commander An feels sorry for her family. She said, "My civilian husband grumbled that he didn't know that contact would be cut off when a Navy officer sets sail, but now he cooks and manages the household better than I do," adding, "I am grateful that he doesn't mind packing for moves once every one or two years."
In 2007, Lieutenant Commander An worked together with her younger brother Major An Seung-hwa in the command and control room of the East Sea 1st Fleet. She said, "When siblings work together, it is easier to consult and give advice, but since we can be evaluated by each other, we act carefully."
