View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is accelerating its overseas nuclear power plant export projects in countries such as the Czech Republic, Romania, and Egypt. It is also preparing to dispatch Korean nuclear power plant decommissioning personnel to Canada. In particular, for the Czech nuclear power plant project, KHNP is forming a dedicated bidding team together with Korea Electric Power Technology, KEPCO Nuclear Fuel, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, and Daewoo Engineering & Construction to pursue the contract.
On the 14th, KHNP announced that it is promoting the construction of one nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1000 to 1200 MW (megawatts) in the Dukovany region of the Czech Republic, with a project cost of 8 trillion won. The Czech Republic is considered the country with the highest export potential.
The Czech Republic is also proactive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Czech Republic held a supply model workshop for potential suppliers in February to order new nuclear power plant construction. KHNP presented the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) turnkey model, citing successful cases from the UAE project and domestic projects.
In response, the Czech side confirmed the EPC business model earlier this month and notified that it will issue a bidding guideline for the new nuclear power plant project by the end of this year. Once the bidding guideline is issued, the process of preparing and submitting bids and evaluating suppliers will take place over six months. KHNP is also pursuing the European Utility Requirements (EUR) certification to objectively verify the technical stability of the 'APR1000' reactor type planned for bidding.
A KHNP official said, "Last year, we met with Czech Minister of Industry Havl??ek and others to explain the safety and economic feasibility of the Korean-type nuclear power plant and the successful cases of domestic and Barakah nuclear power plant projects," adding, "KHNP is currently considered one of the most preferred potential suppliers in the Czech Republic."
In Romania, KHNP is promoting the nuclear power plant operation and maintenance market, and in Egypt, it is advancing the El Dabaa nuclear power plant construction project. In Romania, Units 1 and 2 of the Cernavod? plant are in commercial operation, and KHNP is conducting a large-scale equipment improvement project to ensure the continuous operation of Unit 1. It is expected that the operation and maintenance market will open in these nuclear power plants in the future. KHNP is organizing a joint bidding team with domestic partners to prepare for the anticipated second half of the year bidding for the tritium removal facility (TRF) at the Cernavod? nuclear power plant in Romania and is actively pursuing the contract.
Additionally, KHNP is negotiating with Russia to participate in the secondary side sector of the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt, as Russia is constructing this plant.
There is also a possibility of dispatching Korean personnel overseas. In April, KHNP signed a 'Canada Decommissioning Engineering Support Contract' with Canadian nuclear engineering company Kinectrics and plans to dispatch nuclear power plant decommissioning personnel overseas within this year. This will be the first time Korean nuclear power plant decommissioning personnel are sent abroad.
