K-Blockbuster 'Bando', 1 Million Viewers in 4 Days... Success Amid Theater Slump
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Park Hee-eun] Director Yeon Sang-ho's action blockbuster film "Peninsula" surpassed 1 million viewers on its fourth day of release. This marked the beginning of a recovery in the overall atmosphere of theaters, which had been stagnant due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
On the 18th, the distributor NEW announced that, as of 8:10 a.m. that day, according to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system, the cumulative audience for the film "Peninsula" reached 1,000,790. This pace matches that of "Ode to My Father," which ranked 4th in the all-time box office by surpassing 1 million viewers.
Additionally, "Peninsula" topped the box office in Taiwan and Singapore, where it was released simultaneously with Korea on the 15th, as well as in Malaysia, where it opened on the 16th. In Vietnam, where the film is set to open on the 24th, it recorded the highest pre-sale rate, surpassing that of "Parasite."
