Jeonnam Province Puts Full Effort into Resident Safety during Summer Heavy Rainfall
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 17th that it will make every effort to ensure the safety of residents by preparing countermeasures against landslides caused by heavy summer rains and typhoons.
Landslides are natural disasters in which debris and trees mixed with water rapidly flow down steep mountainous areas or valleys, causing damage to gently sloping farmland and residential areas.
In particular, in mountainous areas, special caution is required when signs of landslides occur, such as sudden water surges on slopes, underground water stops flowing, or trees shake violently despite no wind.
In 2018 alone, Jeonnam experienced landslide damage over 10.33 hectares, and landslides caused by heavy summer rains and typhoons can threaten the lives and property of residents.
Accordingly, the province has established a comprehensive landslide prevention plan and operates a landslide prevention situation room.
They are thoroughly preparing with a focus on preemptive prevention of various damages that may occur due to heavy summer rains, rapid response when situations arise, and swift recovery of damaged areas.
Along with this, emergency duty is carried out according to the crisis alert level with cities and counties, including monitoring weather information related to heavy rains, inspecting landslide-prone areas, and establishing evacuation systems.
This year, with a budget of 20 billion won, the province completed 16 check dams, 33 km of stream conservation, and 16 hectares of mountain conservation projects, and conducted inspections of landslide-prone areas, completing all first-half projects aimed at preemptively blocking landslide damage.
