"‘I am a COVID-19 patient’ - 60-Year-Old Sentenced for Assaulting Police Officer and Causing Disturbance"
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] A man in his 60s who caused a disturbance claiming to be a COVID-19 patient and assaulted a police officer was sentenced to prison.
On the 17th, according to the court, Nam Ki-joo, Chief Judge of Criminal Division 1 at the Seoul Northern District Court, sentenced Park Mo (65), who was charged with obstructing official duties and other offenses for causing a disturbance while intoxicated and claiming he had tested positive for COVID-19, and assaulting a police officer who responded to the scene, to one year in prison.
Park was indicted for allegedly causing a disturbance while intoxicated on the morning of February 25th at around 1:50 a.m. on a street in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, claiming he was infected with COVID-19, and stabbing a police officer’s right chest with a pen when the police arrived after a 112 emergency call. The police officer sustained injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment.

The court stated, "The defendant has nine prior convictions, including similar offenses, and the degree of obstruction of official duties was severe, with the police officer even sustaining injuries." However, the court also considered that "the defendant denied the crime, claiming it was a police fabrication, and showed no remorse at all," as reasons for sentencing.
