Professor Changmin Kim of Jeonju University’s Book Selected as an Excellent Academic Publication by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Geon-ju] The book by Professor Kim Chang-min of Jeonju University in Jeonbuk has been selected as an ‘Excellent Academic Book of 2020’ and will be distributed to university libraries nationwide.
According to Jeonju University on the 16th, Professor Kim Chang-min of Superstar College University’s book, “Hojok Jungcho and the Social Structure of Late 19th Century Jeju Island Villages”, was selected as an Excellent Academic Book of 2020, organized by the Ministry of Education and the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea.
This year’s ‘Excellent Academic Book Selection and Support Project’ received submissions divided into four fields: humanities, social sciences, Korean studies, and natural sciences, with 3,284 domestic first-edition academic books published by 381 publishers. Among them, 271 books were selected as excellent academic books. Professor Kim Chang-min’s book was named an excellent academic book in the humanities field.
Professor Kim’s book, “Hojok Jungcho and the Social Structure of Late 19th Century Jeju Island Villages”, analyzes late Joseon period household registration data using anthropological methods to clarify the social reality of Jeju Island villages during the late Joseon period.
In particular, by revealing that the kinship group ‘Gweondang’ played an important role in village formation, population movement, marriage strategies, and power structures within the village, the book argues that ‘Gweondang’ was a core element of the social structure.

Professor Kim Chang-min focuses on island cultural studies targeting Jeju Island as well as the southwestern sea island regions of Korea such as Heuksando, Jindo, Wido, and Okinawa. His publications include “Cash Crops and Jeju Peasant Culture”, “Anthropology of Korean Family and Kinship” (co-authored), and papers such as “Local Residents’ Responses to National Policy Decisions: Focusing on the Radioactive Waste Facility Controversy in Wido, Buan County”, “Okinawa Current Affairs and the Making of Cultural Identity”, and “Age Groups and the Ideal of Equality: Gapjang in Jeju Island”.
