View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyungpil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 16th that it held a report meeting on the marine bio R&D (research and development) planning projects discovered by universities and research institutions in Jeollanam-do to promote region-led marine bioindustry development and strengthen competitiveness on the 15th.
The report meeting was held with the attendance of Wando-gun Mayor Shin Woo-cheol, and proceeded with presentations of planning projects by the Marine Bio Research Center and Chosun University Marine Biology Research Education Center, followed by discussions on future promotion plans.
The research projects by institution include two projects that align with the government's R&D policy tasks and the fostering of the marine bioindustry specializing in seaweed in Wando-gun: building big data of seaweed polysaccharide research resources, and developing food and pharmaceutical materials for joint improvement derived from seaweed cochlea.
First, the Marine Bio Research Center presented a project on establishing a material bank and big data facility for product development such as health functional foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics using functional polysaccharides extracted from seaweed.
The Chosun University Marine Biology Research Education Center proposed the utilization of seaweed cochlea extracts for developing functional materials for joint improvement, suggesting its use as a pharmaceutical raw material for arthritis, a chronic disease caused by aging.
Wando-gun plans to actively recommend that the research projects discovered this time be reflected in next year's government marine bio research and development projects.
A Wando-gun official said, “This report meeting was prepared to proactively respond to central government research and development projects for the development of food and pharmaceutical materials using functional seaweed materials and the establishment of research and development infrastructure.”

Wando-gun Mayor Shin Woo-cheol said, “Seaweed has various functionalities and high value as a bio material,” and added, “We will establish a foundation for fostering the marine bioindustry specializing in seaweed through continuous research and industrial material development.”
