BGF Retail and Ministry of Environment Launch 'SOS Climate Action Public Campaign'
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] BGF Retail, the operator of CU, announced on the 15th that it is partnering with the Ministry of Environment to carry out the ‘SOS Climate Action Public Campaign.’
The SOS Climate Action Public Campaign is designed to help heatwave-vulnerable groups around us and encourage eco-friendly living through greenhouse gas reduction. As heatwave damage increases every year due to global warming, the public and private sectors have joined forces to raise social awareness and participation in overcoming the climate crisis.
To address the welfare blind spots during heatwaves, BGF Retail, together with companies participating in this agreement, delivered heatwave response supplies earlier this month to about 2,000 vulnerable households in 53 cities, counties, and districts nationwide. Additionally, BGF Retail has designated more than 5,000 CU stores nationwide that voluntarily joined this campaign as ‘Heatwave Shelters,’ opening them 24 hours a day for people exhausted by the heat to visit and rest comfortably. These stores have ‘Heatwave Shelter’ stickers on their entrances.
BGF Retail will also promote the campaign to reduce greenhouse gases. Environmental messages will be attached to ice cream freezers, which are popular among consumers in summer, and related videos will be broadcast on digital signage (electronic displays) inside stores, utilizing about 14,000 CU stores nationwide as promotional channels. Furthermore, starting next month, BGF Retail plans to continuously implement programs encouraging eco-friendly behavior in daily life, such as offering additional Eco Money rewards when consumers purchase eco-friendly certified products.
Previously, BGF Retail was recognized for company-wide eco-friendly management practices, including ▲using biodegradable eco-friendly bags (PLA) at all directly operated stores nationwide ▲conducting the in-house eco-friendly campaign ‘Be Green Friends’ ▲operating the industry’s only eco-friendly convenience store, Green Store, and as a result, it became the first in the industry this year to acquire the ISO14001 environmental management system certification.
