Gangnam-gu COVID-19 Test Samples Surpass 30,000 Cases
Over 290,000 Cases in Seoul City, 10%... Health Center Staff Reallocation and Upgrade to Disease Control Division
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The number of COVID-19 specimen tests conducted by Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jung Soon-gyun) surpassed 30,000 on July 3, reaching 30,103 tests, following 10,000 tests on April 19 and 20,000 tests on May 25.
As of the 4th, Gangnam-gu has conducted 30,188 specimen tests, ranking overwhelmingly first among 226 basic local governments.
This figure exceeds those of metropolitan governments such as Ulsan Metropolitan City, Sejong Special Self-Governing City, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and is similar to the numbers of Daejeon Metropolitan City and Gwangju Metropolitan City, accounting for 10% of Seoul’s total 297,201 tests.
The reason for the high number of specimen tests is that immediately after confirming the movement of the third confirmed domestic case on January 26, District Mayor Jung Soon-gyun instructed that free specimen testing be provided to not only Gangnam-gu residents but also residents from other areas regardless of symptoms if they wished.
Gangnam-gu prioritizes the first step of the ‘3T’ of K-quarantine?‘Test (testing and confirmation) - Trace (epidemiology and tracking) - Treat (isolation and treatment)’?and is actively conducting proactive testing for early detection.
In particular, after testing all employees at workplaces where confirmed cases occurred, random testing is also being conducted on workers in enclosed and densely populated facilities such as local taxi and village bus companies, call centers, insurance sales offices, and multi-level marketing companies. As a result of conducting specimen tests more than twice before and after self-quarantine, 25 confirmed cases were identified in advance.
Gangnam-gu has focused on infection prevention by ▲renaming the Health Department to the Disease Control Department as of the 1st ▲installing an outdoor specimen collection booth at Globe Wall in addition to the Gangnam-gu Health Center screening clinic to reduce medical staff fatigue ▲purchasing a special ambulance equipped with negative pressure facilities for transporting overseas arrivals ▲conducting special tests for vulnerable groups ▲reallocating personnel for rapid response ▲and planning to establish the first domestic Infectious Disease Management Center in the second half of the year.

District Mayor Jung Soon-gyun said, “Looking back at the halfway point of the 7th elected term, the past two years have been a time when we devoted all our efforts with 570,000 Gangnam-gu residents to create a ‘refined Gangnam’ through ‘pleasant changes.’ In the remaining two years, we will do our best with a sincere and tireless attitude to protect the health and safety of residents from COVID-19 by implementing proactive ‘non-face-to-face administrative systems’ and ‘economic revitalization measures’ in preparation for the post-COVID-19 era.”
