On the 2nd, the Global Times reported, citing military sources, that China and India agreed to take effective measures to withdraw frontline border troops and ease tensions in the border area.
The sources explained that China and India held the 3rd military commander-level meeting on the 30th of last month, exchanging frank and in-depth opinions, and studied specific measures to enhance mutual trust and maintain stability.
The sources added, "The military commander-level meeting demonstrated both sides' willingness to ease tensions in the border area and avoid further escalation," and "The urgent task now is to refrain from aggressive moves and risks to maintain peace in the border area." In this regard, Chen Feng, head of the Research Department at the National Strategy Research Institute of Tsinghua University, also said, "It is a positive sign that the conflict between the two countries is easing."
On the night of the 15th of last month, Chinese and Indian troops clashed physically in the Galwan Valley, a disputed area in Ladakh, resulting in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers. The Chinese side did not disclose casualty figures.
