Busan City Supports Dental Industry from Research to Development
Selection of 10 Projects for Dental Technology Research Platform
6 Research Projects and 4 Product Development Projects Selected ... Total Support of 110 Million KRW
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Busan City is undertaking support projects to enhance the competitiveness of the local dental industry.
On the 1st, Busan City announced that it has selected 6 dental research and development projects and 4 product development projects from local small and medium-sized enterprises to revitalize the local dental industry and strengthen competitiveness, providing a total of 110 million KRW in support.
Since last year, the city has been fostering the local dental industry in line with the rapid growth of the dental equipment and supplies market, promoting technology research projects based on an excellent dental industry foundation and collaboration among industry, academia, hospitals, and research institutes.
It is also promoting the ‘Dental Technology Research Platform Construction Project’ for product development, and this year, through public contests and evaluations conducted from April to June, it selected mid- to long-term national projects (research and development tasks) and information and communication technology (ICT) function convergence product development tasks.
The product development projects selected for support this time include the development of dental xenograft containing ‘Soyurae’ collagen, development of dental hybrid ionomer cement, finalization of bone plate product groups for the commercialization of TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) implants, and structural improvement of dental impression material mixing tips. These projects are scheduled to be carried out over the next six months.
Support for discovering mid- to long-term national projects and research and development tasks for government public projects includes developing AI-based ultra-high-speed 3D imaging system technology, developing a deep learning-based AI platform for dental diagnosis, developing raw materials for dental 3D printers, developing quantitative facial nerve injury diagnostic devices, mouthpiece-type oral self-diagnostic devices for early detection and prevention of oral diseases, and developing an AI-based lifecycle dental PHM platform. Research is being conducted with related experts on these tasks.

Byun Sung-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, said, “Most local dental-related companies are small and medium-sized enterprises bearing the cost burden of developing dental medical devices and materials,” adding, “This project is expected to support the growth of local companies through full-cycle support from research and development to product development and to lay the foundation for attracting the Korea Dental Industry Research Institute in the future.”
