The two companies were jointly awarded at GM's recent "Supplier of the Year Awards." Since 2016, GM has annually selected companies that have contributed to improving vehicle performance and consumer experience to receive the Innovation Award. This year, only five companies, including LG Electronics and LG Display, received this award.
Previously, in 2016, LG Electronics, together with LG Chem, was recognized for technological innovation and quality excellence and received the Overdrive Award from GM.
The awards ceremony, marking its 28th year, was held online only this year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. GM had planned to hold the ceremony in March in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
GM highly evaluated the innovation of the digital cockpit system supplied by the two companies for the 2021 model of its premium brand Cadillac's "Escalade." In particular, the gently curved design surrounding the driver's seat was recognized for excellent visibility as well as providing a highly aesthetic interior, delivering differentiated performance.
The Escalade digital cockpit system is based on LG Display's ultra-high-resolution plastic OLED (P-OLED) display. It combines two screens?the instrument cluster and the infotainment screen?into a single 38-inch display. This is the world's first application of a P-OLED-based digital cockpit in a finished vehicle.
The vehicle infotainment system, developed based on LG Electronics' ergonomic Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology, also provides passengers with a differentiated user experience.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics has strengthened its partnership with GM through collaboration in various fields, starting in 2015 by supplying 11 core components, including infotainment, instrument clusters, and drive parts, for Chevrolet's electric vehicle Bolt EV. LG Display is also focusing its capabilities on developing differentiated products and nurturing its business to capture the promising vehicle display market.
Jinyong Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics' Vehicle Component Solutions (VS) Business Division, said, "We will become a world-class supplier that grows continuously with customers by thinking from the customer's perspective."
