[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) is recruiting students for the upcoming elementary school summer vacation English camp, scheduled to be held in August in collaboration with Yonsei University.

Co-hosted by Mapo-gu and Yonsei University and organized by Yonsei University's Language Research and Education Institute, the Mapo-gu Summer Vacation English Camp is held annually to provide elementary school students with quality English learning opportunities under the guidance of native English-speaking instructors.

In March this year, the district signed a new business agreement with Yonsei University for mutual development between the local community and the university, deciding to hold the summer vacation English camp in a non-face-to-face format.

The camp classes will be held from August 10 to August 21, divided into a morning session from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and an afternoon session from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. (No classes on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays)

All classes will be conducted in real-time online sessions using the video conferencing solution ZOOM to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

By July 8, a total of 128 students will be recruited, 64 for the morning session and 64 for the afternoon session, with each class consisting of 8 students and one native English teacher responsible for instruction.

The program consists of various themed experiential classes such as Reading, Music, Art & Craft, and Games. It aims to naturally foster interest and motivation in English and promote self-directed learning.

Eligible participants are elementary school students in grades 3 to 6 who are registered residents of Mapo-gu as of the recruitment announcement date. Participants will be selected through a lottery in July, and a non-face-to-face English camp briefing session for parents will be held on July 24.

The camp fee is 300,000 KRW in total, with the district subsidizing 150,000 KRW. Participants are required to pay a self-payment fee of 150,000 KRW each. Children from 10 low-income households can participate free of charge on the condition of attending at least 80% of the classes, with a 10% self-payment refund.

Applications can be submitted online through the Mapo-gu website. For more details, inquiries can be made to the Mapo-gu Education Support Division.

Since 2007, Mapo-gu has jointly held a total of 21 English camps with local universities, with a total of 2,926 children participating.

Mayor Yudonggyun of Mapo-gu said, “The Mapo-gu English Camp is an opportunity for children to naturally communicate in English with native speakers and become familiar with the language,” adding, “We hope many children will show interest and participate in this well-structured and beneficial non-face-to-face English camp.”
