Joo Ho-young: "I Will Not Take Charge of 7 Standing Committees... Splitting the Legislation and Judiciary Committee Is Also Unacceptable"
[Asia Economy reporters Lee Ji-eun and Lim Chun-han] Joo Ho-young, floor leader of the United Future Party, has expressed his intention not to take on the remaining seven standing committee chairmanships allocated by the number of seats.
On the morning of the 29th, Joo said at the floor leader's office in the National Assembly, "We proposed alternating the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee for the latter two years, but even that was not accepted by the Democratic Party of Korea."
Accordingly, the United Future Party decided to hand over all standing committee chairmanships to the Democratic Party. He explained, "During the negotiation process for the opening of the 21st National Assembly, the Democratic Party broke long-standing customs and traditions by unilaterally taking the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. Under these circumstances, we concluded that taking on the seven standing committee chairmanships proposed by the Democratic Party would not be very meaningful in terms of checks and balances."
Joo added, "Our party's inability to secure the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, and even the refusal to share it, is the Democratic Party rejecting coexistence and cooperation and unilaterally running the National Assembly. Taking on the chairmanships would only cause accusations of being a mere figurehead or obstruction."

He emphasized, "As you know, the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee is a key position for coexistence, cooperation, checks, and balances in the National Assembly, and the opposition party has held this role for a long time. It has served as the salt that keeps our National Assembly, dominated by party lines, alive."
