Hanyang Completes Solar Power Plant in Eco-Friendly Smart City 'Solar City'
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Hanyang announced on the 29th that it has completed the construction of the largest-scale solar power plant in Korea, built on approximately 1.58 million square meters in the corporate city 'Solar City' developed in collaboration with Korea Southern Power, KB Asset Management, and Energy Infrastructure Asset Management in Haenam-gun and Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do.
The Solar City solar power plant is equipped with Korea's largest-scale 98MW solar power generation facilities and a 306MWh energy storage system (ESS). The amount of electricity produced by this power plant is about 129GWh annually, enough to supply approximately 27,000 households for one year (based on 400kWh per household per month). Hanyang directly manages the entire project process from site preparation to EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and O&M (Operation and Maintenance).
Hanyang also created Sun Garden, a 150,000㎡ park within the solar power plant complex, reflecting the development vision of Solar City in collaboration with group affiliates such as Boseong Industry. Sun Garden is a miniature version of the future city Solar City, where nature, people, and energy coexist. The diameter of the circular plaza is about 300 meters, with an observation hill approximately 5 meters high in the center circle.
Hanyang plans to maintain an advanced operation and management system for the solar power facilities even after the completion of Sun Garden. Using drones equipped with thermal imaging detection functions, they will monitor the solar panels and ESS modules in real-time for any abnormalities and analyze the collected data. Additionally, they plan to challenge and achieve results in various renewable energy sectors such as floating solar power and onshore wind power.
A Hanyang official stated, "The Solar City solar power plant will serve as a foothold for expanding into renewable energy businesses. We will share the profits generated by utilizing sunlight, a clean energy source, with local residents and activate the site as a representative tourist attraction of the region, thereby accelerating the development of eco-friendly power plants differentiated from existing power plants."

Meanwhile, in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, Hanyang received construction plan approval from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in March for facilities including a 200,000㎘ LNG storage tank and LNG terminal. In May, it signed a 1.3 trillion KRW investment agreement with Jeollanam-do, Yeosu City, and power generation public enterprises to mutually cooperate and accelerate business promotion. The plan is to establish the 'Northeast Asia LNG Hub Terminal' on approximately 650,000㎡ in the dredged soil disposal site of Myodo, Yeosu, as a Northeast Asian energy hub capable of LNG storage, supply, and trading. Furthermore, the 220MW biomass power plant planned for the Hwanggeum Industrial Complex in Gwangyang Bay, Jeollanam-do, will use fuel such as wood pellets made purely from wood. The public announcement plan was approved in December 2018, and construction is scheduled to begin this year.
