[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] On the 28th, Lee Won-wook, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, claimed that "what young people in their 20s desire is a matter of fairness and justice" regarding the controversy over the regularization of security guards at Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC). This is the first statement of conviction from a ruling party lawmaker concerning the IIAC incident.
On that day, Lee posted on his Facebook, pointing out that "explaining the protests of young people who claim their opportunities were taken away regarding IIAC's regularization as 'not a matter of taking away youth jobs' or 'because of fake news' is missing the essence of the issue."
He continued, "The anger of young people related to IIAC is a challenge to the widespread unfairness in our society and is an issue that must be listened to," adding, "Viewing the anger of young people as 'a problem of losing their jobs,' that is, as a matter of vested interests, fails to see the essence. It is resistance to the loss of fairness."
He then addressed three issues related to the controversy over IIAC's regularization: △strengthening labor rigidity △false hopes regarding wage increases for regular workers △measures for non-regular workers in the public sector outside of public enterprises.
Finally, he emphasized, "What young people are asserting is a matter of fairness beyond 'my job,' and it is a fundamental question of whether the government's labor policy is on the right track."
Earlier that day, a senior Blue House official met with reporters at the press center and said about the IIAC incident, "Through this controversy, we have faced the desperation of young people living in our society today," but also noted, "There is an aspect that this controversy was triggered by fake news."
Democratic Party leader Lee Hae-chan also mentioned the IIAC incident at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 26th, saying, "Issues such as the regularization process are causing confusion among the public due to misunderstandings," and added, "I hope people will be cautious not to cause confusion among the public over such minor matters."
