Rapid Increase in Interest for Samsung and LG Air Conditioners Amid Early Heatwave
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] As the heatwave arrived earlier this year, the amount of information (=interest) regarding air conditioner products increased by more than 20-50% compared to last year.
On the 27th, the Global Big Data Research Institute investigated the big data volume related to air conditioner products from Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Carrier across 12 channels including news, communities, blogs, cafes, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, KakaoStory, Knowledge iN, companies/organizations, and government/public sectors.
Other manufacturers had negligible information volume and were excluded from the comparison.
The survey period analyzed the recent 100 days from March 14 to June 21 (including leap year) this year and the same 100-day period from March 13 to June 21, 2019.
As a result, interest in Samsung Electronics air conditioners increased by 22.33% during the 100 days from March 14 to June 22 this year compared to the same period last year. LG Electronics air conditioners followed with a 22.01% increase, and Carrier (CEO Kang Seonghee) air conditioners rose by 51.52%.
In terms of absolute information volume, Samsung Electronics air conditioners maintained the top position this year as well with 66,240 cases. LG Electronics air conditioners ranked second with a close 64,875 cases.
Despite a more than 50% increase in interest due to the launch of a new concept window-type air conditioner, Carrier air conditioners recorded only 26,250 cases in absolute information volume, placing third.
Regarding net favorability, calculated by subtracting the negative rate from the positive rate, Samsung Electronics air conditioners scored the highest at 41.73%. LG Electronics air conditioners ranked second with 39.89%, and Carrier air conditioners were at 39.81%. All three companies saw an increase in net favorability compared to last year.
Posts containing more words such as "pretty," "good," "satisfied," "best," "laugh," "high quality," and "well done" are classified as positive, while those with more negative words like "bad," "angry," "low quality," "dissatisfied," "cry," "annoyed," and "cannot" are classified as negative.
However, the institute explained that even if positive or negative words are included in a post, it does not necessarily mean that the sentiment is directed at or refers to the manufacturer or product in question.

Hyunsook Lee, head of the Big Data Analysis and Reporting Center, stated, "Although interest in air conditioners has increased due to the early heatwave expected this year, concerns about COVID-19 infection in enclosed indoor spaces have also been raised, so it is uncertain whether the increase in interest will lead to increased sales."
