Incheon City Completes 100% Implementation Plan Approval for Long-Term Unexecuted Parks Ahead of Sunset Clause
By 2022, 48 Parks Established Over 6.18㎢ Area Twice the Size of Yeouido
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City has completed the administrative procedures to create an urban forest twice the size of Yeouido by 2022.
On the 26th, the city announced that it had completed the approval of implementation plans for 48 long-term unexecuted parks covering an area of 6.18㎢.
This implementation plan approval is a measure in preparation for the park sunset system set to take effect on July 1. Green spaces designated as urban parks but left unexecuted for more than 20 years will lose their park designation after the park sunset system is implemented. This system considers the demands for regulatory relaxation from park landowners who have faced restrictions on exercising property rights for a long time.
Accordingly, the city plans to create 48 parks over an area of 6.18㎢, which is 2.1 times the size of Yeouido, by 2022, with a project cost of 564.1 billion KRW.
Once the project is completed, the park area per capita will increase from the current 11.7㎡ to 12.9㎡, ranking second among special and metropolitan cities, following Sejong City.
The city is also promoting projects to transform into a green city resilient to climate change through long-term unexecuted park linkage projects such as ▲connecting urban park green spaces (Green e-Eum project) ▲creating wind corridor forests along Incheon-daero ▲and greening abandoned railroads.
The first task of the Green e-Eum project, the connecting overpass for Central Park districts 3, 4, and 5, was completed last month. In the future, the city plans to expand connections to districts 1 and 2 and 6, 7, and 8, and continue projects linking major park green spaces such as Sorae Wetland Ecological Park to Obongsan and Baegun Park to Hambongsan.
The city also intends to accelerate the Incheon-daero parkification and abandoned railroad urban wind corridor forest creation projects.
Mayor Park Namchun said, "We have successfully completed the approval of implementation plans so that none of the long-term unexecuted parks become invalid and all are developed," adding, "We will continue to expand green infrastructure that plays a role in protecting citizens' health."
