View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) is expanding online services such as Korean language and crime prevention education for foreigners in the area in response to the prolonged social distancing due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
In April, due to the spread of COVID-19, the Yeonnam Global Village Center in Mapo-gu opened and operated an online Korean language class for foreigners in the area. The education, which lasted 8 weeks until the end of May and involved 106 foreigners from 24 countries, showed a high satisfaction rate of 90% among the participants.
Accordingly, the district announced that from June, it will add one more class to the existing 10 classes and conduct the second semester of the online Korean language class. The education, which starts on June 8 and runs online for a total of 13 weeks until September 3, will have about 180 foreigners participating.
The education method uses Kakao Live Talk, which was the most preferred according to survey results. The instructor lectures in real-time on the KakaoTalk screen, and students participate in the class through the chat screen.
In a situation where face-to-face classes cannot be conducted, the participation and satisfaction of foreigners in the online Korean language education are high.
Along with Korean language education, the district, in cooperation with the Mapo Police Station, will conduct crime prevention education for foreigners from the 24th to July 1. The education, held online over 19 sessions, introduces the main methods of smishing and voice phishing crimes related to COVID-19 and guides on how to prevent damage.
Additionally, education on the revised Road Traffic Act, which foreigners should be cautious about regarding the recently increasing trend of electric one-person transportation devices such as electric wheels, electric kickboards, and electric bicycles, will be conducted simultaneously.
Furthermore, the online disaster preparedness class provides foreigners with information on evacuation methods during fires, how to use fire extinguishers, and first aid methods.
Since its establishment in 2008, the Yeonnam Global Village Center in Mapo-gu has been operating various education and welfare projects to help foreigners in the area adapt to Korean culture and settle in their daily lives.
