LG Uplus to Create '5G Specialized City' with Gumi City and Kumoh National Institute of Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] LG Uplus announced on the 24th that it will collaborate with Gumi City and Kumoh National Institute of Technology to cooperate on "building smart city and factory infrastructure based on 5G technology."
This collaboration aims to transform Gumi City into a "5G specialized city." Based on ICT technologies such as 5G, the plan is to expand smart factories capable of manufacturing innovation and improve urban infrastructure so that companies and workers can work in a comfortable environment. First, LG Uplus will establish a dedicated 5G network for the Gumi Industrial Complex. Individual or multiple factory networks within the Gumi Industrial Complex will be connected into a single dedicated 5G network, enabling a communication security environment stronger than general commercial networks. Based on the high-quality dedicated 5G network, ICT technology will also be applied to factory manufacturing and production processes. In equipment, quality, and process stages, productivity can be increased through remote control linked with IoT (Internet of Things) technology. In logistics, efficiency can be improved using autonomous robots.
Urban infrastructure will also be improved. The introduction of solutions for the safety and security of workers in resident companies, such as smart drones, intelligent video security, and patrol robots, will be considered. Through these collaborative projects, not only will the productivity and efficiency of existing resident companies in the Gumi Industrial Complex be improved, but it is also expected that new company settlements will increase based on the competitiveness of the improved Gumi City infrastructure. In the future, the three organizations plan to concretize cooperation measures by establishing an "LG Uplus Cooperation Center" at the Kumoh National Institute of Technology Industry-Academic Cooperation Building and forming a dedicated task force including experts.
