[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) announced on the 23rd that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation on global citizenship education projects targeting domestic youth with the Korea Youth Work Agency (KYWA).

According to this agreement, KOICA will provide 20 educational courses for elementary, middle, and high school students composed of various experiential activities themed around the 5Ps (People, Peace, Prosperity, Planet, Partnership), and plans to support the installation of global citizenship education exhibition halls at three national youth centers (Goheung, Cheonan, Pyeongchang). KOICA will also offer online and offline global citizenship education instructor training courses and various educational materials for KYWA internal staff and youth leaders.

KYWA plans to conduct global citizenship education for instructors trained with KOICA’s support and for youth. The educational programs will be expanded through various affiliated youth training facilities, including five national youth centers nationwide (Goheung, Gimje, Yeongdeok, Cheonan, Pyeongchang).

KOICA and KYWA proactively conducted global citizenship education for about 80 KYWA internal staff, including employees from the five national youth centers, at the Cheonan and Pyeongchang national youth centers from the 10th to 12th and the 17th to 19th. In July and August, they plan to conduct instructor training for about 60 youth leaders nationwide. The installation of global citizenship education exhibition halls at the three national youth centers (Goheung, Cheonan, Pyeongchang) is scheduled to be carried out around November.

KOICA has been conducting education to enhance understanding of international development cooperation for Korean citizens, especially focusing on youth education to promote understanding of international development cooperation in Korea and the international community and to raise global citizenship awareness. Through cooperation with KYWA, which has expertise, a broad network, and infrastructure in youth education, it is expected that global citizenship education can be effectively expanded to more youth.

Im Ki-young, President of KOICA, said, “The importance of global citizenship education, which fosters the spirit of global solidarity and cooperation, has been further emphasized due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” and added, “We hope that this MOU will create synergy by combining KOICA’s expertise in global citizenship education and KYWA’s expertise in youth education, contributing to the growth of our youth as responsible members of the global community.”
