MFDS Joins Hands with National Medical Center to Combat Infectious Diseases
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 23rd that it will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Medical Center to support the development of new drugs for infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and to cooperate on national response efforts.
This agreement was promoted after Minister Lee Eui-kyung visited the National Medical Center on April 23 and recognized the need for cooperation between the two institutions, which possess expertise in COVID-19 treatment development and infectious disease research.
Through this agreement, the two institutions will strengthen the foundation for cooperation to establish a proactive national quarantine system not only for the urgent current COVID-19 response but also for future emerging infectious diseases.
Currently, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety operates the ‘Go·Rapid Program’ and the ‘K-Vaccine Rapid Review Task Force’ to support swift entry into clinical trial phases for COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. As of the previous day, 13 treatments and 2 vaccines have been approved.
The main areas of cooperation include ▲ sharing specialized knowledge and information on infectious diseases ▲ consultation and personnel exchange regarding drug approvals and clinical data related to infectious diseases ▲ consultation and information sharing on the emergency use of treatments.
The two institutions plan to form a working-level consultative body in the future and promote the formation and exchange of a pool of experts for consultation on clinical trial protocols.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the National Medical Center stated, “Taking this MOU as an opportunity, the two institutions will actively exchange the specialized knowledge and capabilities they have accumulated in infectious disease treatment and drug development to create a healthcare system that can ensure the healthy lives of the public.”
