[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is producing 600 copies of the '2020 Easy-to-Understand Local Tax' booklet in four languages for multicultural and foreign residents, distributing them to the district office civil service center and foreigner centers.
The number of foreign residents in the area totals 56,483 (as of 2018), with the foreigner ratio at 14.3% of the total population, the highest nationwide.
Accordingly, the district created the local tax guidebook to provide local tax-related information to foreigners who are not familiar with Korean and to protect taxpayers' rights.
The '2020 Easy-to-Understand Local Tax' is written in four languages: Korean, Chinese, English, and Vietnamese, making complex local tax information easy to understand.
Notably, unlike the booklet produced in 2018, Vietnamese was added to expand the benefits to more residents.
The booklet explains the meaning of local taxes along with concepts and payment methods for each tax item such as acquisition tax, property tax, automobile tax, and resident tax, and also provides a monthly local tax payment schedule.
It also introduces disadvantages of non-payment of local taxes, as well as village tax accountants, taxpayer protection officers, and local tax rights relief systems.
The district distributes 600 copies of the '2020 Easy-to-Understand Local Tax' booklet to community service centers and places them in civil service departments such as the Civil Service Passport Division, Assessment Division, and Collection Division.
It is also made available at foreigner support organizations such as the Seonamgwon Global Center, Healthy Family Multicultural Family Support Center, and Dadream Cultural Complex Center.
The Yeongdeungpo District Office website also posts an electronic file of the 'Easy-to-Understand Local Tax' booklet to support convenient use in an online environment.
