[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] At the Honam region meeting hosted by the Democratic Party of Korea's COVID-19 National Crisis Overcoming Committee (Chairman Lee Nak-yeon), voices were raised on various issues by Song Gap-seok, Chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Party, along with Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province.
According to the Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party on the 22nd, Song Gap-seok, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party, requested active support at the central party level to ensure that Gwangju's COVID-19 overcoming New Deal budget is actively reflected in the 3rd supplementary budget and next year's main budget.
Chairman Song stated, “The party has regularly held policy councils with metropolitan city and provincial parties, and today’s meeting seems to be another form of such policy councils,” and suggested, “Please support so that the contents prepared by local governments are reflected as much as possible in the 3rd supplementary budget and next year’s main budget.”
He continued, “I understand that metropolitan governments have diligently prepared proposals for livelihood stabilization measures and the promotion of the Korean New Deal policy,” and emphasized, “In Gwangju, active interest at the party level is needed particularly for the artificial intelligence industry, eco-friendly industries centered on the Green New Deal, and support for win-win regional jobs.”
Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju, emphasized job creation based on artificial intelligence, with Gwangju leading South Korea in the digital New Deal sector.
In response to the increased interest in environment and climate change due to COVID-19, he requested the passage of the preliminary feasibility study for the eco-friendly air industry project promoted as the Gwangju-type Green New Deal project, and the approval by the National Assembly of the design costs for the clean air industry cluster project included in the government supplementary budget.
Regarding the military airport relocation issue, Mayor Lee said, “Since the military airport relocation is a national project, the Ministry of National Defense should take the lead with responsibility to resolve this issue by promoting legal amendments, and at the same time, support measures such as additional incentives for the relocation areas should be reviewed.”
At the meeting, Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, strongly requested the establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam, which is the only province nationwide without a medical school, amid concerns about a second COVID-19 pandemic, and the additional construction of a ‘large-scale synchrotron radiation accelerator’ linked with Korea Electric Power Corporation University (KEPCO University).
