"Stop African Swine Fever" Continuous Crackdown on Illegal Livestock Products
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 22nd that they have established a cooperative system to prevent the introduction of African Swine Fever (ASF) and have managed it through crackdowns and guidance to ensure that illegally imported livestock products are not distributed or sold.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, in collaboration with the Quarantine Headquarters and local governments, conducted regular inspections of 1,417 foreign food retail stores nationwide and operated a government joint special crackdown team to monitor and crack down on illegally sold imported livestock products in Korea.
As a result of focused crackdowns and inspections mainly in areas densely populated by foreigners, 43 stores violating distribution and sales regulations were detected and reported from August 2018 to September 2019; however, no violations have been found since October 2019 to the present.
Regarding the online sale of prohibited imported livestock products, dedicated personnel have been assigned for continuous monitoring, and measures such as site blocking and reporting have been taken against violating stores.
Since the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in China in August 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has been conducting crackdowns on the smuggling of livestock products at airports and ports in cooperation with related ministries.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety believe that illegal distribution and sales have decreased as a result of continuous crackdowns and inspections on smuggling and illegal distribution and sales of imported livestock products at airports and ports.
