[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] Incheon International Airport Corporation has decided to directly employ 1,902 security screening personnel, marking the final stage of the three-year-long process of converting non-regular workers to regular positions. On the 22nd, Incheon Airport Corporation announced that out of a total of 9,785 non-regular airport workers, 2,143 will be directly employed, and 7,642 will be transferred to airport subsidiaries.
According to Incheon Airport Corporation, among the total candidates, 2,143 workers in three fields?airport fire brigade (211), wildlife control (30), and passenger security screening (1,902)?will be directly employed by the corporation. Meanwhile, 7,642 workers in airport operations (2,423), airport facilities and systems (3,490), and security guards (1,729) will be transferred to three specialized subsidiaries respectively.
Incheon Airport Corporation first resolved the major issue concerning the 1,902 security screening personnel by directly employing them as Cheongwon Police officers. Initially, the corporation planned to hire these personnel as regular employees of subsidiaries first and then directly employ them after relevant legal and institutional improvements, as the Security Services Act prohibits the employment of special security guards.
However, the security screening personnel consistently demanded direct employment, citing President Moon Jae-in’s statement in 2017 that "safety and life-related sectors must be converted to regular positions." Accordingly, the corporation decided to directly employ them as Cheongwon Police officers. Cheongwon Police are police officers assigned to guard national critical facilities or workplaces and are permitted to carry firearms if necessary.
