POSCO and SK Group Conduct 'Global Model Citizen Week' Together
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] POSCO is conducting the 'Cheer Up My Town & Remember Our Heroes' themed 'Global Model Citizen Week' to revitalize the local economy, which has been weakened by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), and to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korean War.
'Global Model Citizen Week' is a special volunteer week in which POSCO Group employees worldwide participate by utilizing their talents to help solve social issues and contribute to the development of better local communities.
Starting this year, the 'Global Volunteer Week,' which POSCO has held annually since 2010, has been newly launched as 'Global Model Citizen Week' by linking the corporate citizenship management philosophy with the intention of voluntarily participating in solving global social problems.
'Global Model Citizen Week' is held for nine days from the 19th to the 27th of this month, during which various non-face-to-face and untact volunteer activities are carried out by thoroughly adhering to social distancing measures in daily life amid COVID-19, utilizing individual skills, specialties, and expertise.
First, to support local communities struggling due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, various consumption promotion campaigns to revive neighborhood businesses are being conducted mainly in Pohang, Gwangyang, and Incheon, where POSCO Group’s business sites are located. Volunteer activities such as disinfection efforts for local residents, mural painting on village walls, and agricultural machinery repair work were carried out in rural villages in these areas. Additionally, overseas locations such as China, Indonesia, and Vietnam plan to operate COVID-19 infection prevention education and free markets to provide daily necessities to locals facing difficulties due to COVID-19.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War, various activities expressing deep gratitude for the noble sacrifices and dedication of veterans will also be conducted. In Pohang, landscaping and environmental beautification volunteer work will be carried out at the Hakdo Volunteer Corps Victory Memorial, a patriotic memorial site. In Thailand, local corporation employees will donate a TV for video viewing to the Thai Military Korean War Veterans Memorial, and conduct environmental cleanup activities such as tree planting and large-scale cleaning.
In particular, in cooperation with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, 40 households of Korean War veterans living in Pohang and Gwangyang who are facing difficulties will be selected to receive support for improving their living environments. This support activity is part of the home repair project in which POSCO’s talent volunteer group directly participates, including wallpapering and electrical repairs. Starting with four households in the Gwangyang area on June 20, the project plans to complete support for 40 households by October.
Meanwhile, this year’s event gains additional significance with the participation of SK, which has continuously collaborated to solve social issues. At the '2019 Corporate Citizenship POSCO Performance Sharing Forum' held last December, SK Chairman Chey Tae-won was invited to give a special lecture introducing SK’s social value activities and emphasizing their importance.
On the 25th, POSCO will hold a signing ceremony with SK to jointly participate in the 'Happy Alliance' project, which supports lunchboxes for children suffering from food insecurity to improve child welfare in blind spots. Following the signing ceremony, POSCO and SK employees will prepare and deliver lunchbox bags containing homemade food and groceries to 70 low-income and elderly households in the Seoul area.
