Kim Jae-yeon, Progressive Party Leader, "We Will Prepare for Progressive Governance... Will Become an Alternative Party"
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Kim Jaeyeon, the Standing Representative of the Progressive Party, announced that she will pursue the path of a popular progressive party aiming for progressive governance.
On the 21st, Representative Kim wrote on her Facebook, "Changing the party name from Minjung Party to Progressive Party is not just about changing the name," adding, "It is a promise to boldly innovate and become a new alternative party, and a determination to unite and advance together with party members and the people."
She emphasized, "I will make the Progressive Party an alternative party. From now on, I will steadily prepare for progressive governance," and "I will take what needs to be realized at this stage from the perspective of 'governance' as the standard for all projects and activities. I will follow the path of a popular progressive party that opens a new era."
Founded in October 2017, the Minjung Party is the successor of the former Unified Progressive Party, which was centered around former lawmakers Lee Seok-ki and Lee Jeong-hee. Former Unified Progressive Party leader Lee Jeong-hee publicly appealed for support for the Minjung Party ahead of the 21st general election, but the party failed to enter the National Assembly, receiving only 1.05% of the vote in the proportional representation election.

On the 20th, through the 3rd nationwide simultaneous party officer election, the Minjung Party elected former Unified Progressive Party lawmaker Kim as the next standing representative and changed the party name to the Progressive Party after a name revision vote. Representative Kim is 39 years old and was elected as a proportional representative lawmaker for the Unified Progressive Party in the 19th general election. However, she lost her seat when the Constitutional Court decided to dissolve the Unified Progressive Party in December 2014.
