Shin Won-sik: "Government Must Resume ROK-US Joint Exercises and Redeploy Strategic Assets on the Korean Peninsula"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Shin Won-sik, a member of the Future United Party, raised his voice, saying, "The government should immediately resume the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises and push for the redeployment of U.S. strategic assets on the Korean Peninsula."
On the 19th, Shin held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office and stated, "It is very natural given that there has been no progress in North Korea's denuclearization and North Korea's military threats and provocations against the South continue," adding, "The United Party fully supports this."
He expressed full support for the proposal made by former ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Commander Vincent Brooks on the 17th (local time) during a CSIS online seminar to resume the deployment of strategic assets on the Korean Peninsula.
He pointed out, "The deployment of U.S. strategic assets on the Korean Peninsula and the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises, which had been conducted based on the ROK-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty, became nominal and ineffective following the 2018 Singapore Summit," adding, "At that time, the actions taken by both South Korea and the U.S. were a serious mistake that prematurely exhausted a very useful card to promote North Korea's denuclearization and deter provocations."

Shin said, "Although it is late, if the former ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Commander Brooks' proposal is accepted by the South Korean and U.S. governments, it will have the effect of deterring North Korean provocations and strongly urging North Korea's denuclearization."
