40s Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Causing Casualties While Driving in Reverse to Evade DUI Check
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Juhee] A woman in her 40s who caused casualties by driving in the wrong direction on the road to evade a drunk driving crackdown and colliding with an oncoming vehicle was sentenced to three years in prison in the first trial.
The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Kim Jeonghwan) announced on the 17th that it sentenced Ms. A, who was tried on charges including violation of the Special Act on the Treatment of Traffic Accidents, to three years in prison.
The court stated, "The passenger in the victim's vehicle died, and the passengers in both the victim's and the offender's vehicles sustained serious injuries, making the crime severe and the outcome grave," adding, "However, consideration was given to the fact that settlements were made with the victims and that the deceased was not wearing a seatbelt at the time."
Ms. A was indicted for causing an accident on the evening of September 23 last year at around 9:45 p.m. on a road in Buk-gu, Ulsan, where she was driving a Morning passenger car with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.062%, and upon noticing police conducting a drunk driving checkpoint, she crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming i30 passenger car.
As a result of the accident, Mr. B (53, male), who was in the i30, died at the scene, and the vehicle driver Ms. C (59, female) suffered serious injuries including fractured ribs.
