LG Science Park announced on the 16th that it signed the 'LG Science Park-Seoul National University AI Research Institute Joint Research Cooperation' agreement at Seoul National University located in Gwanak-gu, Seoul.
This joint research cooperation was promoted to connect the academic research achievements of the Seoul National University AI Research Institute with the industry.
The Seoul National University AI Research Institute, established in December 2019, is the largest AI research organization in Korea, conducting large-scale collaborative research with about 270 Seoul National University professors and approximately 2,000 AI researchers from Seoul National University.
LG plans to strengthen the AI network through regular research outcome exchange meetings with the Seoul National University AI Research Institute, create opportunities for joint research, and foster talent through internships and personnel exchanges.
In particular, the Seoul National University AI Research Institute conducts research and development in the widest range of AI application technologies in Korea, including core AI technologies such as reasoning and learning, language and cognition, vision and perception, data intelligence, AI systems, AI semiconductors, robotics, and autonomous driving, as well as AI applications in fields such as healthcare, new drug development, finance, humanities, media, education, materials, and chemistry. It is expected to create synergy with LG, which is building a related business portfolio.
The AI Promotion Team at LG Science Park is responsible for establishing the group's mid- to long-term AI strategy, discovering business models, and coordinating to create synergy among affiliates.
Baek Gyeonghun, Executive Director of the AI Promotion Team at LG Science Park, said, “Through open innovation such as joint research cooperation with the Seoul National University AI Research Institute, we will collaborate comprehensively with competitive companies, universities, and research institutes to contribute to revitalizing the domestic AI ecosystem.”
Jang Byeongtak, Director of the Seoul National University AI Research Institute, said, “LG Science Park, which seeks solutions to various problems using AI, and Seoul National University AI researchers, who possess skilled and creative AI experts, will create synergy together. We expect Seoul National University researchers to conduct meaningful research while solving real-world challenges with companies.”
Meanwhile, LG has been actively promoting open innovation through collaboration with academia related to AI.
In January last year, LG Electronics partnered with KAIST to launch the ‘LG Electronics-KAIST Advanced AI Course.’ It currently operates 10 courses in four areas: video, voice, control, and advanced algorithms.
From April this year, LG also ran a ‘Manufacturing AI Leader Course’ for about 20 employees selected as AI leaders for three months in collaboration with Sungkyunkwan University. Participants received core theoretical education on AI and big data from professors in the Department of Software and the Department of Systems Management Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University and carried out problem-solving tasks linked to their work.
