Baek Jong-won x Ham Young-jun Power... Two Pieces of Dasima Boost 'Odongtongmyeon' Popularity and Ottogi Mall Delivery Delays
'Matnam-ui Gwangjang' Trailer and Broadcast Trigger Otgogi Mall Traffic Surge
Otgogi "Temporary Delivery Delay Due to Odongtongmyeon Popularity... Currently Normalized"
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Sunghye] Consumers have shown enthusiastic support for the collaboration between Baek Jong-won, CEO of The Born Korea, and Ham Young-jun, Chairman of Ottogi. The online mall's delivery system was even paralyzed due to the surge of consumers trying to purchase the limited edition Odongtongmyeon containing two pieces of kelp from Wando, Jeollanam-do.
On the 16th, Ottogi's online mall, 'Ottogi Mall,' posted a notice stating, "Some product shipments are delayed due to a surge in orders." An Ottogi representative explained, "After the preview of SBS variety show ‘Delicious Rendezvous’ aired on the 4th, we pre-released Odongtongmyeon with two pieces of kelp on the online mall and held a discount event of about 1,000 won, which caused a sudden increase in purchases and temporary delivery congestion. Although we secured stock for the official product launch on the 8th, orders surged again after the main broadcast of ‘Delicious Rendezvous’ on the 11th, causing delivery delays." According to Ottogi, product purchases and deliveries have now normalized.
On the 8th, Ottogi released a limited edition Odongtongmyeon containing two pieces of clean kelp from Wando. This was a measure taken following Baek’s request to Chairman Ham on the show ‘Delicious Rendezvous’ to help clear the kelp stock from Wando, Jeollanam-do.
On the broadcast, Baek asked Chairman Ham, “Senior, there are 2,000 tons of kelp left. If ramen companies add just one more piece of kelp, it would be huge. Since it came to mind, let’s give it a try.” Chairman Ham responded positively, saying, “We currently have kelp in our product, but adding about two pieces would create a much deeper flavor.” Afterwards, Ottogi prepared the limited edition release to coincide with the official broadcast.
The limited edition Odongtongmyeon features more chewy noodles and a rich broth flavor and refreshing umami taste derived from the two pieces of kelp.
Since 2005, Ottogi has been selling 'Odongtongmyeon' containing kelp. Until recently, kelp produced in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do was used, but due to this event, kelp produced in Wando, Jeollanam-do is now also being used. An Ottogi representative said, "Depending on consumer response to the limited edition Odongtongmyeon, we will consider whether to release it officially."
