[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Kim ○○, the child of a dementia senior citizen Lee ○○ living in Deungchon-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, sent a text message to the Gangseo-gu Dementia Safety Center.
"Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), my mother has not been able to go out at all, and she was spending a dull time. However, after participating in the dementia prevention online lecture and receiving the activity kit, I was very touched. It felt like receiving a heartfelt gift in each kit, so I sincerely want to express my gratitude to the staff at the Dementia Safety Center. My mother watched every video from the first series without missing any, and we will watch the second series diligently as well."
The Gangseo-gu Dementia Safety Center (Director: Jihyang Jeong) in Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor: Hyun-song Noh) prepared various online courses for registered dementia patients and high-risk seniors as the suspension of program operations due to COVID-19 prolonged.
Previously, the center produced a dementia prevention activity video titled "Brain Strong Memory Enhancement," which is easy to follow at home for high-risk seniors and those requiring treatment, and conducted online lectures via YouTube.
The "Brain Strong Memory Enhancement" online lecture, conducted over five sessions, recorded over 4,000 views, showing active participation and positive responses from seniors, leading to the preparation of the second series of the "Brain Strong Memory Enhancement" online lecture.
While the existing lecture focused on beginner-level exercises that seniors must perform and solving home-use cognitive enhancement booklets, the second series is conducted as special activities using the "Memory Filling Kit," such as making brain-healthy snacks in each session.
The "Memory Filling Kit" is a package containing various activity materials needed when seniors participate in the online lectures, produced by the center and distributed to seniors' homes.
In particular, the second series of "Brain Strong Memory Enhancement" includes not only special activities for dementia prevention but also valuable information that seniors need to know, such as how to prevent voice phishing.
The "Brain Strong Memory Enhancement" online lecture is open to anyone aged 65 or older residing in the area, in addition to seniors registered at the center, and related videos can be received by contacting the Gangseo-gu Dementia Safety Center.
Also, videos can be viewed by searching for "Gangseo-gu Dementia Safety Center" on YouTube.
Meanwhile, besides online lectures via YouTube, the center also operates "Memory Filling Good (9 o'clock) Morning" using the Kakao channel and "Memory Filling zoom" using the video conferencing platform Zoom.
"Memory Filling Good (9 o'clock) Morning" is a program that sends activity sheets helpful for cognitive function improvement to seniors every morning at 9 a.m. via the KakaoTalk channel, where therapists and seniors communicate and solve problems together.
"Memory Filling zoom" is an online real-time video class where therapists, seniors, and assistants communicate together and perform assigned tasks to overcome dementia.
