'Samsung Man' Lee Jae-il Appointed as Daegu Innovation Center Director: "Upgrading the Startup Ecosystem"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] Daegu Creative Economy Innovation Center announced on the 13th that Lee Jae-il (58), the 3rd center director appointed through a public contest, will begin his two-year term starting on the 15th.
To appoint the new center director, Daegu Innovation Center conducted an open recruitment from April 2 to 17. Among 28 applicants, Lee Jae-il was finally confirmed as the new center director after document and interview evaluations by the Center Director Recommendation Committee, board resolution, and approval from the Minister of SMEs and Startups.
Lee, a graduate of Kwangwoon University’s Department of Applied Electronics Engineering, joined Samsung Semiconductor & Telecommunications in 1987 and worked at Samsung Electronics for 32 years until last year. Notably, since 2012, he served as head of the Talent Development Center and the Creative Development Center, introducing and successfully operating Samsung Electronics’ in-house startup program C-LAB and Spin-Off, earning recognition as an expert in innovative entrepreneurship.
Center Director Lee Jae-il expressed his inauguration remarks, stating, "Amid environmental constraints of uncertainty, I will do my best to open 'a newer world through startups' with three major innovation strategies: business innovation, network innovation, and organizational innovation."
Meanwhile, Daegu Innovation Center, launched on September 15, 2014, as the first innovation center nationwide, has been carrying out various projects to revitalize the local startup ecosystem.

C-LAB, a regional startup representative incubation program jointly operated with Samsung Electronics, started from its first cohort in 2014 and has discovered and graduated 133 companies through the ninth cohort to date. Additionally, this year, it established the nation’s first full-cycle startup ecosystem covering the four major startup packages: preliminary, early, leap, and re-challenge stages, providing customized support for each growth phase.
