Baekje Instrumental-Themed Play 'Mimaji!' Tryout Performances on 19-20
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The play "Mimaji!", based on Baekje traditional music, will hold a tryout performance on the 19th and 20th at the Traveler Small Theater in Daehak-ro, Seoul.
There are various theories about Mimaji. Some say Mimaji was a real person, others claim it was the title of a Baekje traditional music leader, and some believe it was the name of a musical group.
The theater company Nanhee sets Mimaji as a real person. In the play, Mimaji leaves Baekje and develops traditional music in Japan. He is portrayed as the first Hallyu star who embodied a life crossing between religion and the secular world. The play explores and imagines Mimaji's artistic world and the essence of the traditional music he created.
The story woven by Mimaji and his contemporaries (Princess Seonhwa, King Mu of Baekje, Emperor Suiko, Prince Shotoku) connects and expands through the episodes appearing in each act of traditional music (Lion Dance, Chwiho King, Ogong, Garura, Baramun, Gunryun, etc.).
The theater company Nanhee was founded in 2017 by playwright Kim Myunghwa, who recently staged "Dionysus Under the Magnolia" and "Hamlet, the Dead Do Not Speak." Kim completed the script for "Mimaji!" last November and held a reading performance at the Traveler Theater on the 8th and 9th. After this tryout performance, the main performance is scheduled for January next year.
The tryout cast includes Baek Ik-nam, Shin An-jin, Jang Jia, Kwon Il, Jung Se-yeon, and Kim Ki-joo. With performances of the piri, percussion, and geomungo, plus choreography by actor Cha Hee, the play is expected to be rich in both visual and auditory experiences.
