Hyundai Oilbank Unconcerned About Oil Spills... Files Patent for Leak Detection Sensor
Plan to Install 'Hyundai Homes' Leak Detection System at All Gas Stations Nationwide Within the Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] In the future, operators of Hyundai Oilbank gas stations are expected to be freed from concerns about soil contamination, which can cost from hundreds of millions to tens of billions of won.
Hyundai Oilbank announced on the 11th that it has filed a patent application for its eco-friendly oil leakage detection system technology called 'Hyundai HOMES (Hyundai Oil Leakage Monitoring Expert System)'.
'Hyundai HOMES' attaches detection sensors to the pipes connected to each fuel dispenser to detect oil leaks. Gas station operators can monitor the presence and location of leaks in real time through receivers installed in the office or via mobile devices. Even if the sensor malfunctions, the sensor exterior is made of tempered glass to allow visual confirmation of leaks.
In areas where gas stations are located, soil contamination can occur when the pipes connected to the oil storage tanks deteriorate and leak oil. Tank leaks can be easily identified through daily inventory management using level gauges, but leaks occurring in underground pipes cannot be detected without specialized institutions.
In urban gas stations, which are adjacent to buildings, soil contamination can easily spread to the basements of nearby buildings. In such cases, the cleanup costs are known to reach up to tens of billions of won. Due to this burden, many gas stations in provincial urban areas remain abandoned as eyesores because they cannot even file closure reports.
A Hyundai Oilbank official stated, "We plan to install 'Hyundai HOMES' in all owned gas stations by the end of this year and are considering support for SK Networks’ directly operated and independently owned gas stations as well." He added, "We intend to actively utilize this eco-friendly technology, which prevents large-scale soil contamination, to attract gas stations and support business activities."
