Professor Park Jong-cheol of Suncheon National University Publishes 'European Medicinal Herbs and Botanical Gardens'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Professor Park Jong-cheol of the Department of Herbal Medicine Development at Suncheon National University (President Ko Young-jin) announced on the 9th that he has published “European Medicinal Herbs and Botanical Gardens,” introducing medicinal herbs from botanical gardens and palaces in 13 European countries, from Paris, France to Helsinki, Finland.
Professor Park Jong-cheol of Suncheon National University included vivid photos of medicinal herbs and locally researched data taken from 12 botanical gardens across Europe, including Charles University Botanical Garden in the Czech Republic, 6 markets including the international market in Hangis, France, 12 palaces and gardens such as Hellbrunn Palace in Austria, and the Alps, collected from 2010 until last year, to assist not only experts in European medicinal herbs but also interested general readers.
The photos of Commiphora simplicifolia, resembling myrrh famously gifted by the Magi to baby Jesus, and Galbanum, similar to the herbal medicine Awi, are considered valuable resources. The book also introduces Korean endemic medicinal herbs such as Chamdanggui found at the Paris Botanical Garden and the University of Vienna Botanical Garden in Austria, as well as Ammi, a medicinal herb used for developing vasodilators, encountered at the University of Zagreb Botanical Garden in Croatia.
Notably, this book serves as a guide for readers who wish to personally visit the locations introduced in the text by including actual addresses, websites, and maps of the places where the plants grow in Europe, along with explanations of their medicinal effects and scientific names.
Professor Park Jong-cheol of Suncheon National University stated, “This is the first book published domestically that organizes medicinal herbs from European botanical gardens, markets, palaces, and gardens.” He added, “I hope it becomes a useful guide not only for researchers but also for the general public.”
