Making Burial Clothes in a Leap Month Brings Longevity and Health
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Yong-chul] Boseong Sambe is made entirely by hand, from harvesting hemp (sam) using traditional methods to spinning the thread and weaving the fabric, taking a full two days to make one set of burial clothes.
Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 9th that sales of Boseong Sambe burial clothes have increased since the leap month began on the 23rd of last month.
Since ancient times, the leap month in April has been considered the "luckiest of lucky days," with many people preparing burial clothes. It is also regarded as a month free from impurity (bujeong) and misfortune (aek), during which people tend to take care of postponed household matters such as tending to ancestral graves. The leap month in 2020 (lunar April) was from May 23 to June 20 in the solar calendar.
Boseong Sambe is known as a luxury hemp fabric because it is so durable that its color does not fade or change even after 100 years, and it has a smooth texture. In particular, artisans who have honed their skills for over 50 years personally produce the burial clothes, from growing the hemp and spinning the thread to completing the garments.
Park Young-nam, a Sambe artisan who makes Sambe clothes in Bongsan-ri, Boseong-eup, said, "Since early May, the number of people nationwide inquiring about or coming to see burial clothes has noticeably increased," adding, "I am spending busy days making burial clothes."
