Seodaemun Natural History Museum Children's Docent Exhibition Commentary via Video
17 Volunteer Children Take on Commentary for 17 Topics Including the Solar System and Cosmic Background Radiation
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun Natural History Museum (Director Nam-sook Lee) has produced "Exhibit Explanation Videos" and posted them on its website for children who wish to visit the museum and participate as child docents in exhibition explanations.
A docent refers to a volunteer who provides exhibition explanations. Since 2008, the museum has operated a "Child Docent" program to offer friendlier exhibition explanations tailored to the perspective of child visitors.
Every year, the museum recruits and selects applicants from students in grades 4 through 9 who are interested in natural history and museums, and provides training. Currently, there are 35 child docents.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, docent activities are expected to be difficult to resume for the time being, so this content was prepared. Seventeen child docents who wished to participate selected exhibits within the museum that they would guide, discussed with the curator in charge, and wrote their own scripts. Filming was conducted with one docent entering the museum at a time, following COVID-19 safety guidelines.
The child docent explanation videos can be viewed on the Seodaemun Natural History Museum website's news section and on YouTube (search for "Child Docent"). Each video is about 2 to 4 minutes long and includes subtitles to enhance viewing convenience.
Since the end of last month, videos on the solar system, Jupiter, Mars, the history of the universe, cosmic background radiation, and plate tectonics have been uploaded, with a total of 17 videos to be provided sequentially.
