Basic Income Debate Tightens... Support 48.6% vs Oppose 42.8%
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A survey found that public opinion on the 'basic income system,' which provides a minimum living allowance to all citizens, is evenly split within the margin of error.
According to Realmeter's survey commissioned by YTN's 'The News' on the 5th, 48.6% of respondents supported the basic income system to ensure a minimum standard of living, while 42.8% opposed it, citing concerns over the financial burden on the state and increased taxes, the agency announced on the 8th. Meanwhile, 8.6% responded that they were unsure.
By region, support was higher in Gyeonggi-Incheon (Support 57.0% vs Oppose 35.8%) and Gwangju-Jeolla (48.7% vs 39.3%). In Daejeon-Sejong-Chungcheong (48.3% vs 45.9%), Daegu-Gyeongbuk (48.1% vs 40.5%), Seoul (42.1% vs 50.7%), and Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam (40.3% vs 47.3%), opinions were closely divided.
By political party support, the Open Democratic Party and Democratic Party supporters showed over 60% in favor, whereas the United Future Party recorded over 70% opposition.
Regarding ideological orientation, progressive respondents favored the introduction (Support 63.4% vs Oppose 30.8%), while conservatives largely opposed it (31.2% vs 67.0%). Among moderates, support (48.7%) and opposition (42.3%) were nearly balanced.
By age group, support exceeded 50% among those in their 20s and 60s, but 54.0% of respondents aged 70 and above opposed the system. In the 50s (Support 49.5% vs Oppose 44.5%), 40s (49.2% vs 40.8%), and 30s (46.3% vs 47.4%), the responses were nearly even.
Additionally, students and labor workers showed higher support, while homemakers tended to oppose. Office workers and self-employed respondents were evenly split in their opinions.

The survey contacted 10,881 adults aged 18 and over nationwide, with a final response of 500 participants, yielding a response rate of 4.6%. The sampling error is ±4.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
