Smoothie King Introduces 'Vegan Bakery' Made with 100% Plant-Based Ingredients
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] Shinsegae Food’s ‘Smoothie King’ announced on the 4th that it has launched two types of ‘vegan bakery’ products that do not use any eggs, milk, or butter.
Smoothie King has focused on the growing interest in vegan (vegetarians who do not consume any animal-derived ingredients) foods as the culture emphasizing health, environment, and ethical consumption spreads mainly among the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z). According to the Korea Vegetarian Union, the number of vegetarians in Korea last year was estimated to be between 1.5 and 2 million, with 500,000 vegans, a more than tenfold increase compared to 150,000 in 2008 over the past decade. In response, Smoothie King decided to expand its vegan bakery lineup by adding two new menu items to the two existing vegan bakery products, ‘Blueberry Crumble Cake’ and ‘Carrot Walnut Muffin,’ which were first launched in 2017.
The two newly introduced vegan bakery items from Smoothie King are characterized by a moist and soft texture made entirely from plant-based ingredients such as soy milk and canola oil, without using any eggs, milk, or butter. The ‘Vegan Apple Crumble Cake’ uses sweet domestic apples, offering a crisp texture and a subtle cinnamon flavor, harmoniously combined with the crumble topping and almond slices.
The ‘Vegan Chocolate Chip Muffin’ delivers a rich chocolate flavor that fills the mouth with every bite, and the vegan chocolate chunks embedded inside add a fun chewy texture. Notably, both items have received vegan bakery certification from the Vegan Society of the UK. The Vegan Society of the UK is recognized by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as an official certification body for food and livestock product labeling and advertising.
The two new vegan bakery menu items will be available at Smoothie King stores nationwide starting from the 4th, priced at 4,200 KRW for the ‘Vegan Apple Crumble Cake’ and 3,500 KRW for the ‘Vegan Chocolate Chip Muffin.’

A Smoothie King representative said, “There is a common prejudice that vegan bakery products are dry and tasteless, but these new menu items have been upgraded based on the technology developed through our previous vegan bakery sales, delivering a taste comparable to regular bread. We will continue to develop healthy and delicious menu items in line with Smoothie King’s brand philosophy.”
