Government Provides $18.5 Million Humanitarian Aid to Yemen... 80% of Population Faces Humanitarian Crisis Due to Civil War
Hamsangwook, Multilateral Diplomacy Coordinator, at the 'High-Level Pledge Virtual Meeting for Responding to the Yemen Humanitarian Crisis'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Ham Sang-wook, Director-General for Multilateral Diplomacy Coordination at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended the high-level pledge video conference held from 10 PM on the 2nd to 2 AM on the 3rd Korea time to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, and announced a humanitarian aid plan worth 18.5 million USD (approximately 22.5 billion KRW) to address the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
This meeting was jointly hosted by the Saudi government, the largest donor to Yemen, and the United Nations to consolidate international support and contributions for responding to Yemen's humanitarian crisis, which has worsened due to the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
According to the United Nations (UN), due to years of civil war, about 24 million people, approximately 80% of Yemen's total population, require humanitarian assistance, making it one of the most severe humanitarian crises alongside Syria.
This year, our government's support will be provided to address Yemen's COVID-19 response, food shortages, and support for vulnerable groups. It also includes our annual rice aid project to Yemen, which has been ongoing since 2018.
Director-General Ham reaffirmed our position supporting the international community's efforts to end the Yemen civil war, urging regional tension reduction, prevention of COVID-19 spread, and prompt humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people who are suffering simultaneously from the civil war and COVID-19.
Furthermore, he emphasized that, following President Moon Jae-in's announcement last month at the World Health Assembly of a plan to contribute 100 million USD in humanitarian aid related to COVID-19 response, Korea will actively contribute to the international community's efforts against COVID-19.
