Worldwide Mobile Game Downloads Reach 12.3 Billion, Up 18% Year-on-Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] NCSoft's 'Lineage 2M' was ranked the number one game in global revenue on Google Play in the first quarter.
Mobile data analytics platform App Annie announced on the 1st that Lineage 2M topped the revenue charts on Google Play, while Tencent's 'Peacekeeper Elite' recorded the highest revenue on the Apple App Store in the first quarter. On the Nintendo Switch Lite, 'Animal Crossing' took first place.
In South Korea, an average of 13.4 million mobile games were downloaded weekly in March, a 15% increase from the weekly average of 11.7 million in January. The game with the highest revenue in South Korea was Lineage 2M, followed by NCSoft's 'Lineage M' in second place, Lilith Games' 'Rise of Kingdoms' in third, Nexon's 'V4' in fourth, and 4399's 'Crasher: Origin' in fifth.
App Annie stated, "As consumers spend more time at home, they are seeking new ways to communicate with others, and with easier access to mobile devices, multiplayer game applications will continue to grow."
App Annie predicted that app downloads and consumer spending will increase across the mobile gaming market this year. Since 2014, mobile games have surpassed PC/Mac games and home console games in consumer spending, continuing their record growth. This year, the gap in consumer spending is expected to widen to 2.8 times that of PC/Mac games and 3.1 times that of home console games.
In the first quarter, when the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was greatest, global mobile game downloads increased by about 18% year-over-year to approximately 12.3 billion, and consumer spending grew by about 2% to reach $16.6 billion. During the COVID-19 period, global mobile game downloads set a new record with a weekly average of about 1.2 billion.

The weekly average of mobile game downloads worldwide in March increased by 35% compared to January. By country, Spain saw the largest increase at 60%, followed by Japan at 50%, and France, the United Kingdom, and Italy each increased by 40%.
