[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Global companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Intel, along with world-class accelerators, have joined forces to support the successful globalization of domestic artificial intelligence (AI) startups.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Park Young-sun, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry), the Small and Medium Business Corporation (Chairman Kim Hak-do, hereinafter referred to as SBC), and the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development (President Kim Kwang-hyun, hereinafter referred to as Kised) announced on the 1st that they are recruiting startup teams to participate in the 'Global Startup Academy.'

Recruitment for this program runs from the 2nd to the 25th. The 'Global Startup Academy' is a project planned by the Ministry based on over 10 years of experience operating the Youth Startup Academy, aiming to provide new types and methods of education and incubation programs suitable for the Fourth Industrial Revolution era. Unlike typical domestic startup education and incubation programs, it is characterized by specialization in globalization and AI professional education.

While existing domestic startup education programs have focused on basic management knowledge such as business administration and taxation, the Global Startup Academy plans to provide technical education that can be practically commercialized and global-level accelerating. The goal is to enable enrolled teams to start businesses using AI technology or improve existing business items by integrating AI.

The support programs of the Global Startup Academy are broadly divided into education, incubation, networking, and commercialization support. Education focuses on AI technology and commercialization capabilities that can be applied in practice. Four global companies leading the world AI market?NVIDIA, Microsoft, Amazon, and Intel?as well as the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) participate as educational institutions.

Incubation will focus on broadening the global perspective of startup teams and developing the sensibility and capabilities to enter global markets early. In consultation with participating accelerators, incubation experts will be stationed at the Global Startup Academy to provide close support to startup teams. Detailed support includes mentoring for startup teams and linking with local networks. Startup teams will be able to experience multiple global accelerators in one place and enhance their capabilities.

Additionally, startup teams will have opportunities to form global networks in connection with international organizations and to concretize global business models suitable for target markets. Programs for exchanges with domestic large corporations and public institutions will also be operated.

The Ministry will provide up to 50 million KRW in commercialization funds to startup teams and plans to establish business spaces within the 'Global Startup Academy' to support teams without business locations. Priority will be given to startup teams that have basic AI capabilities but face difficulties in commercialization or those seeking to integrate AI into existing business items, in line with the purpose of this education program.

This year’s newly operated Global Startup Academy is an eight-month course and will initially open and operate at SparkPlus in Gangnam. Later, it will move to G Square in Guro, expected to be completed by the end of the year, and continue operations there to create synergy through exchanges with about 10,000 nearby small and venture companies.
