Xinhua News Agency "Trump tries to profit from G7 meeting... It won't go as he wishes"
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] Regarding U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement to postpone the scheduled G7 summit this month to after September and his intention to invite South Korea, Australia, Russia, and India, Chinese state media described it as an "act of pursuing self-interest."
On the 1st, Xinhua News Agency, in an analysis article under the 'International Observation' category, stated, "The U.S. plan to expand the participating countries of the G7 summit and postpone the meeting contains President Trump's self-interest. It will not go as planned."
The newspaper first pointed to Germany's refusal to attend the offline meeting as the reason President Trump had no choice but to decide to postpone the G7 summit. The article explained, "The U.S.' unilateralist policy has further deepened the rift among G7 allies," adding, "Recently, when President Trump proposed holding an offline meeting in Washington at the end of June, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her intention not to attend. This was partly due to the COVID-19 situation but also because of the U.S.' unilateralism."
It further stated, "President Trump is pushing to hold the offline meeting considering the presidential election in November," and added, "Through the G7 summit, President Trump likely wants to publicly announce that the U.S., having endured COVID-19 and violent protests, has returned to normal."
The article also assessed that although the U.S. intends to invite other countries including Russia to the G7 summit, it is unlikely to be realized.
The newspaper reported, "Expanding the G7 summit to a G11 summit will not go as planned," and added, "The attempt to bring in Russia will cause dissatisfaction among G7 allies. It is also uncertain whether Russia will accept the U.S.' invitation. There are structural contradictions between Russia and the U.S., making it difficult to resolve."

Meanwhile, on the 30th of last month (local time), President Trump announced his intention to postpone the originally scheduled G7 summit this month to after September and to invite South Korea, Australia, Russia, and India at that time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the G7 summit was being pushed to be replaced by a virtual meeting, but the U.S., as the chair country of the G7 this year, proposed holding an offline meeting in Washington at the end of June. When Germany expressed its intention not to attend, the U.S. suggested expanding the participating countries and postponing the meeting to after September.
