[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Hee-eun Park] On the 31st, a total of 9 people, including 5 family members in Anyang-si, Gyeonggi Province, and 4 people in Gunpo, were confirmed positive for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). They are a church pastor, congregants, and their families who traveled together to Jeju Island, raising concerns about a cluster infection within the local community.
Anyang-si and Gunpo City announced that 5 out of 7 family members of Pastor A, including an elementary school student, tested positive for COVID-19 on that day.
The confirmed elementary school student is Pastor A’s grandson, who was found to have attended school on the 28th.
Four others, including the couple of Pastor B from a church located in Gunpo but residing in Anyang-si, were also confirmed positive between the previous day and that day.
It was confirmed that the 4 confirmed cases in Gunpo, including Pastor B, and Pastor A and others traveled together to Jeju Island from the 25th to the 27th.
The trip included 25 people, such as pastors and church officials from 3 churches in Anyang and 8 churches in Gunpo.
Accordingly, Anyang City ordered the elementary school attended by Pastor A’s grandson to suspend attendance. Diagnostic tests will be conducted starting that afternoon on about 150 faculty and students who had contact with the student.
Additionally, a gathering ban was imposed on the 3 churches, including the one Pastor A belongs to, that traveled to Jeju. The city plans to conduct a full investigation of about 100 congregants of Pastor A’s church.
With the additional confirmation of Pastor A’s family, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Anyang has reached 35.
