Jeonju-si, Special City Status 'Gaja~'... Legislative Notice for Amendment of Related Laws on Population Over 500,000
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gominhyeong] Jeonju City has laid the groundwork for being designated as a special city, which had been virtually uncertain.
This is because the government, as requested by Jeonju City, included in the full revision of the Local Autonomy Act that cities with a population of over 500,000 can be designated as special cities considering administrative demand and national balanced development.
On the 29th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced the legislative notice of the "Full Revision of the Local Autonomy Act," which includes criteria for recognizing special status for special cities and other large cities.
A special city maintains its status as a basic local government while being granted administrative and financial authority and autonomy equivalent to that of a metropolitan city.
The revision specifies that ▲ metropolitan cities with a population of over 1 million, and ▲ cities with a population of over 500,000, considering administrative demand and national balanced development, can be designated as special cities by the Minister of the Interior and Safety according to standards and procedures prescribed by Presidential Decree.
Although there remains the task of including Jeonju in the Presidential Decree regarding cities with a population over 500,000 and recognition as a special city, the possibility of Jeonju being designated as a special city, which was impossible under the original government proposal, has increased.
This bill is scheduled to be submitted to the 21st National Assembly in early July after a legislative notice period of about 20 days until the 17th of next month and a Cabinet meeting review at the end of June.
