Changnyeong Ttaoki, Second Release This Year... Expectation for Ecosystem Restoration
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] Gyeongsangnam-do, the Ministry of Environment, the Cultural Heritage Administration, and Changnyeong-gun announced on the 29th that 40 Oriental white storks, a natural monument (No. 198) and an endangered wild species (Class 2), were released into the Upo Wetland in Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam, from the 'Upo Oriental White Stork Restoration Center.' This is the second time following last year.
The Oriental white stork was once familiar enough to appear in children's songs, but it became extinct in Korea after last being observed in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in 1979.
In 2008, through the Korea-China summit, four storks were brought from China as a symbol of friendship between the two countries, and successful breeding and restoration at the 'Upo Oriental White Stork Restoration Center' has resulted in a total of 384 storks.
The Oriental white stork, belonging to the order Ciconiiformes and family Ciconiidae, feeds on fish, amphibians, reptiles, and insects such as loaches, frogs, snails, earthworms, and mole crickets in wetlands like rice paddies.
The 'Upo Oriental White Stork Restoration Center,' an institution under Changnyeong-gun, released 40 storks into the wild for the first time last year. Observations showed that 25 storks are surviving healthily around the Nakdong River and Upo Wetland, 13 died due to natural predators such as wildcats and martens, and the remaining 2 were injured on their wings and beaks and are currently receiving treatment after rescue.
