Gwangjin-gu, Nationwide First to Install 'Talking Shade Shelter'
Pilot Operation at 6 Locations with High Foot Traffic Including Kondaeipgu Station Intersection and Dongseoul Terminal Front... Promoting COVID-19 Social Distancing and Quarantine Rules via Lighting Speakers Installed Inside Shade Shelters
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Seon-gap) is the first in the nation to install a ‘Talking Shade Shelter’ where announcement broadcasts are transmitted from the shade shelters, actively promoting COVID-19 prevention guidelines such as social distancing in daily life.
The ‘Talking Shade Shelter’ is equipped with a lighting speaker, an audio device installed inside the existing parasol-type shade shelters, which broadcasts announcements through the lighting speaker about COVID-19 prevention daily quarantine rules, social distancing while using the shade shelters, and precautions when using similar entertainment facilities.
The lighting speakers installed in the shade shelters not only transmit announcement broadcasts but also turn on LED lights at night to help secure visibility for nighttime drivers and serve as security lights.
Solar panels are installed on the outside of the shade shelter parasols to supply power in an eco-friendly way using solar energy.
The district has installed and is piloting the ‘Talking Shade Shelters’ at six locations with high foot traffic: Konkuk University Entrance Intersection, in front of Dong Seoul Terminal, Achasan Station Intersection, Children’s Grand Park Station Intersection, and Jayang Intersection.
When the COVID-19 situation eases, the ‘Talking Shade Shelters’ will provide residents with daily life information directly related to their lives or offer music.

District Mayor Kim Seon-gap said, “The district is actively promoting COVID-19 prevention guidelines and social distancing in daily life through various methods including the district website, SNS, and the Talking Shade Shelters,” and added, “We ask residents to comply with COVID-19 prevention rules and practice social distancing in daily life so that we can overcome COVID-19 as soon as possible.”
