Next Month is the Month of Patriots and Veterans... Event Scale Reduced
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu]The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs plans to promote various commemorative events and campaigns under the theme "History Overcome Together, Continuing Today" in June, the "Month of National Defense and Veterans," but the scale will be reduced.
According to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs on the 28th, on the morning of June 6, Memorial Day, the "65th Memorial Day Ceremony" will be solemnly held at the National Seoul National Cemetery under the theme "We Remember You in the Name of the Republic of Korea." About 10,000 people participated in last year's event, but this year, attendance has been reduced to around 500 to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). On the same day, memorial ceremonies will also be held in 185 locations nationwide, including the National Daejeon National Cemetery.
On the following day, June 7, the "100th Anniversary Ceremony of the Victory at the Battle of Bongodong (1920)" will be held at the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, with about 400 attendees.
The Battle of Bongodong is considered one of the three major victories of the independence army, along with the Battle of Cheongsanri and the Battle of Daejeonjaeryeong. On the 25th, a 70th anniversary event of the Korean War will be held in Seoul with about 500 participants, and commemorative events will be held in 216 locations nationwide in accordance with the central event.
Projects to honor the sacrifice and dedication of national merit recipients will also be promoted. The Ministry plans to award silver "Appreciation Medals" to about 84,000 surviving Korean War veterans as a token of gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication.
Various veterans' cultural events, mainly online, will be held under the supervision of veterans' offices nationwide, including the installation of nameplates for "Houses of National Merit" with participation from government agency heads, local government heads, and the general public, as well as commendation ceremonies for exemplary national merit recipients.

In addition, the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) and the Korea Football Association (KFA) will promote the screening of the "Month of National Defense and Veterans" campaign video produced by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs before games throughout June.
